Latter square 4 lamp type.
Some upgrade the wiring for larger gauge so voltage drop is less, others fit a relay in the circuit to minimise volt drop and damage to the switch.
The most cost effective upgrade is the bulbs themselves; where modern manufacturing techniques allow for hotter burning/whiter bulbs to be produced see;
H4 Osram Night Breaker +90% or
Philps Extreme +80%

Personally I think upgrading the wiring with relays first, then add better bulbs. Round headlights are preferred in America, but most vans have quad stock..

But the americans only have really crap headlamps (square or round (I think all US vans had square after 85)). They like round ones because they get european round ones. euro square ones are also much better than their square ones. South african (still euro beam paterns) ones seem to be the must have as you can still get them easy over there.
If your lenses don't have H4 on them, swap them for ones that do, you can get round or square. Then get some better bulbs like the Phillips/osram extreme/nightbreaker. Relays are good but aren't a must if your staying 60w which those bulbs are. If you go higher watage you WILL need relays and wireing upgrades, also be working the altinator harder, personly I'd go the efficent route. That'll make a very big improvment.

True Glen. Euro square are available but not as easy to get as euro round.
