Paint with a roller? No chance!!

Having read the Wiki and other postings I decided to roller my van! No chance of a decent job said I.
My advice is: Do not do it!!!! It gives a lousy result!!! Not worth the effort!!

OK then, it's brilliant. I have now done 2 coats and need one more I reckon. All with 2.5 litres of paint!
But don't you do it, I want the tidiest van.

Seriously though, this is a brilliant alternative to a spray job (for which I was told would cost at least £1200. I was told this today by a paint sprayer, he was very impressed by the progress so far, and the cost). You have to pace yourself and be aware that you have to wait for paint to harden before each flatting. My colour is more orange than I wanted, I wanted a deeper red, but the Tangoed effect is rapidly growing on me. The shading/light patches on the pics is just light reflection. There are just a couple of dark patches on each panel to paint over.
Problems:
Couldn't get the smaller high density foam rollers
Flies
Didnt rub down enough on one of the rear vent areas (previous paint had edges) (Preparation is SOOOOOOOO important, spend a long time on preparation, it pays dividends).
Various paint prices, I saved £20 by posting a help notice! (Honest). :)
Drips: Put cardboard down, or paint on a surface that doesn't matter. Another option is to wet the floor before starting.
Finally, tell people to F**k off when they say "What are you doing? You need to spray paint to get a good job, this'll be crap".
Look at pics and see for yourself!

AND: It really can be done for less than fifty quid!!!
I'll post a pic when it's all finished and rebuilt.

What else could you have done for £40. The bus looks really good. Were you tempted to put a nice orange stripe down that grey focus, to cheer it up a bit, as a lovely surprise for the neighbours.

Good job. I'm plannng to do mine come March next year and the more I see of other people doing it the more confident I become of doing a good job myself.

Did you have a helper for spotting runs?

Looks great!

What paint is that?

Not rustoleum is it? If it is, it looks way brighter than the one on the colour chart (which I was thinking about doing my van in).

How many coats so far?

I'm sorely tempted now.

Keep up the good work.

Barney

It's Rustoleum RAL 3020.
Yellow? :run
It was meant to be more of a Cherry Red but it's growing on me. Paint neighbours car? No chance, although I did catch it with the roller  (she doesn't know 'cos I wiped it off! hope she doesn't come on here).
2 coats so far. I reckon one more thinnish coat should do it. Then wait another week for it to harden before polishing it back. No spotter watching for runs, did the whole lot by myself 'cos everyone was busy!!!!
It actually looks better in the pics.
One thing I did notice. I have some blooming (dulling) on the front panel below windscreen. We had a bit of a frost last night, don't know if that's what did it. I managed to polish a bit of it out but I'll do rest whan it's hardened off some more.
I would recommend this method. It is cheap and effective. Just remember to prepare well and follow the advice.
BTW, I was quoted over £50 for 2.5 litres delivered. Managed to get it for just over £31 delivered from combilour.co.uk (thanks for the pointer). Fast delivery too!

dont take too much notice of the charts , theyre not very close at all from what ive seen

airfix paints mix with it , theyre about £1 a tin so you can buy a couple of those to tint the paint in the direction you want to go

I tell you something, the above comments make me feel so proud. It took some convincing some 80/90 members that the roller method actually works (hence the very lengthy WIKI to cover most questions) but I'm seeing more and more of them in my own area now so I guess its gone national.

In the long-term its keeping these wonderful vehicles in better condition for longer and thats good for all of us. Perfectionists on a budget can certainly match a spray job if they put in a little time but if you just want a spruce up, even unflatted its not a bad finish.

I still want to see someone do a camouflage job. I reckon three shades would do it, masked.

Go 80/90 go!

Oh and don't worry about flies. Think of it as nature preservation - lol.

Paint in mornings and fly count will be low. Tweezers help but they do flat out fine unless you get a stag beetle plague.

I still prefer May/June for this for warmer drying weather without ridiculous heat or summer bugs but I guess March could be ok. Blooming will be cold/damp for sure but amazing that you've still managed to do it in September/October - well done.

We had a warm day when I did first coat, slightly less warm day and a night frost for second coat. Should be a cold, wet miserable day for third coat then  If we don't get a reasonable day I'll just polish it back and give it a couple more coats next year! I can spend winter sprucing up the interior!
Thanks for all advice and comments.
Nice one CovKid :D

that orange looks like the same orange that the Original guy who used this technique on his dodge charger back in January 2006 I believe this is the thread that started the whole ' paint you vehicle with a roller' thing up http://board.moparts.org/ubbthreads/sho ... art=1&vc=1 I recall it was picked up by the vw vzi forum then by the 8090 forum.mini forum etc etc. another good link from a few years ago is herehttp://www.rickwrench.com/index79master ... paint.html
It seems like rustoleum was replaced by another sort of paint as the choice of paint to use a couple of years ago( for the americans at least)

If you want to get the paint to dry quicker inside or out use liquid driers you can get it in any paint wholesalers. By adding a few drops to your paint kit it can knock hours of. DO NOT put more than it says on the tin or it will have the opposite effect. Stick a blow heater on the van to get some heat on it and it will be dry in no time happy painting watch the dust !
