Strange Air con Fault

I have the full length air con fitted on my '91 US Vanagon and although I dont use it often due to the already poor fuel consumption it seems to have a bizarre fault.
It will only operate when the speed selector is in position 1 or 2 ,unless the the radiator fan has kicked in due to engine temp when it works fine in 1 to 4.
Anyone got any ideas , I was thinking on the lines of a short to either relay aircon/rad fan.

Find yourself a Bentley manual as there is a good explanation of how it works as well as a fault finding section on this subject.

Long time since i worked on air-con stsyems, but it might be that the increased airflow across the condensor when the radiator fan is running is aiding the condensor, allowing the air-con system to function on full speed. With the rad fan not running, the condensor isn't efficient enough and the system is shutting down on the high pressure switch due to inadequate cooling of the refrigerant through the condensor. Check that the condensor isn't blocked with flies/dandelion seeds/leaves etc. (Condensor is mounted in front of the radiator i think, just looks like a small additional radiator).

Cheers dude had a closer look at the condenser today and it has been mangled at some stage of its life , either blasted with a pressure washer or hit with something so could explain why it doesnt work correctly . Cant say I'm going to go out of my way to get a new one

In fact I'm taking off the V belt this afternoon and be done with it.
Cheers
