Whilst i was checking for leaking oil after my sump plug mod (see Sump plug blues)

I notice that the heater pods cable operating springs were rather weak and possibly the bowden cable had streched. they were of course rusted to hell and back. I then checked that the cables actually moved when the heater cool to tepid operating lever in the cab was moved. the cables moved but the pod operating lever did not move on the nearside and only slightly on the offside. I pondered a solution as it seemed that the springs where now very tired and the cable end stop so rusted that if i had attempted to undo the retaining bolt pete tong would have visited me at a rate of knots. so i ponded a solution what with winter looming, being warm in the cab would be a bounus.

Now if the pods aren't knackerd I may get more warmth in the cab. NOTE I did say may....

Nice one. My cables and clips were so busted in the past, I tried a piece of pushbike cable and the clamps they use to lengthen the ends of mine as they'd snapped. But after a while they slipped, so I got some big elastic bands between the pod operating lever and the lug on the chassis that the cable is supposed to go through to pull them open permanantly. Good in the winter but I have to drive everywhere with the windows open on hot days! I'll get round to buying new cables one day.

Going back to my beetle days, coathanger wire and choc-blocks were favourite repairs. That said, wedging them on was the second choice. As always, everyone waits till weather gets cold before sorting the heating out.
