diesel not running :(

hope this is the right one to post in
i hhave a 1y diesel, its barely works, its been good as gold for that last 10 000 miles. It just about starts if you havethe throttle all the way down. however its very smoky, its unburn diesel, there is also a knocking noise that soounds like its comming from the back, no 4. end

Eventually it runs, but only if the throttle is about half way. the smoke clears, lbut is still slightly present, and returns again if you decrease the revs, at which point it just cuts out.

Ive changed round the injectors, hoping that this may help trace a duff inj
, but noise is still at the back, and smoke is still there. cracking off the inj tops, derv squirts out each one, and the engine does seem any better (agin lexpecting a duff inj)

its used no water, oil is still same level,
i am a bit lost now, and you help is much appricated. i dont have a compression tester either.

thanks

aaron

Sounds like bottom pulley problem, check cam and pump timing you should find they are way out, if they are out just bin it.

bottom pully in what way andy? bolt come loose or the drive belt has jumped?

if its riight will it caused lasting damage?

It sounds like what andy is saying, but before deciding ,check it first. Take the upper belt cover and valve cover off. Line up the crank at the flywheel to TDC ,then check at the cam and pump pulley to see if they are lining up. If not then yes time for a another motor or a rebuild. Unfortunely, it could be that a couple of pistons and lots of valves will be damaged

There is a keyway built into the pulley which locates on crank, these are common for breaking off, if it happerns the crank is always dead, valve damage likely, lifter damage likely, piston damage likely, con rods sometimes bend.

Check it first but i think thats what happened.

Mine went but the engine was ok, just had to botch up the keyway though.

I thought this was not a problem with the 1y?

How long ago was it? piston damage can take a while to show up with oil consumption and gradual loss of compression, i have never seen one completely get away with it.

Happens to all the 1.9 indirect injection engines.

Mine is a 1.6, but there was no damage to the engine but it had only just come loose so it was running only a bit out of time.

Different cause of problem on the 1.6, the 1.9's normally take a while to totally fail and by then everything is dead. I had one with 4 smashed pistons, 1 bent rod, 8 bent vales, a few broken lifters, blown head gasket and a melted turbo impeller

I would say could also be worn pistons/rings leading to lack of compression hence it getting a bit better when warm.. as with the others.. bin it or full rebuild time - it's only gonna get worse!
