I did about a 130 mile round trip this weekend. I had been stationary overnight and decided to drive somewhere which took about 15 minutes to get to - the van seemed ok. But when i pulled up at traffic lights, i was slowing down and the van started upping its revs. The when I put it in "P" the revs went right up. Got worried and started driving again (lights had changed to green, its ok!)...pulling into a car park, i notice it was revving again, whilst i was slowing down...
Parked up in "P" and the revs went right up again.
The van was stationary for about 20mins and when i went to start up again it was turning over, but wouldnt start. Took about 5 mins - then it was fine - quiet a strong smell of petrol though, once it had started which last a few seconds only.

Now, its been cutting out every now and then and i still dont know why. It cuts out randomly whilst im driving sometimes, especially when im doing about 60 - it slows right down seems to lose power and then bolts back into action? The lights etc stay on, so im presuming its not the battery?

Thanks all - ive thought so far, blocked carbs?, gunk in the petrol tank, accelorator cable stuck?

It's the cable or the linkage where it meets the autobox on the drivers side.

There is a double linkage on the drivers side of the gearbox which is often dry and after lubrication the problem disappears.

Check the cable is free and the linkage isn't sticking and I guarantee it will be fine.

Mine did it and it scared the crap out of me (try doing 60 on the lanes and it sticking on you!) till I worked it out.

Either that or you have a faulty Pierburg 2e series carb (very common fault - best replaced with a Weber 32-34DMTL.

If all previous suggestions are fruitless, make sure the secondary choke spindle (on the carburettor) is nice and free to move as it should. If this is partially siezed in the open position it will cause all sorts of similar running concerns ie fast idle/over reving etc etc.

Im not overly familiar with carbs - but im going to look in my Haynes when i get back from work. Im trying to familiarise what it looks like in my head, but its not working!!
Im not greatly techy, but i dont mind giving things a try.
I've got the van booked in with a friends garage tomorrow - so maybe if i give them suggestions as to what it might be, using the info youve kindly given me, it might remedy the situation quicker

Could this problem be responsible for the amount of petrol im putting in at the moment - im only getting about 18mg?
There are no fuel odours and ive checked for any signs of leakage in in the fuel lines..but cant see anything obvious.

I suppose it could be put down to any current running issues you may be having, but any thing between 18-24 MPG is regarded as being acceptable for these vehicles fitted the standard VW petrol engines....

By the same token fast idling will only make things worse..
