Just bought new van and want to do an oil and filter change, can anyone recommend oil to use for this engine. cheers...

Morris 15W40 XHD diesel oil, top stuff. And a Mann filter.

Any good quality 15W40 Turbo Diesel oil (note Turbo/Diesel) not ordinary oil that says it covers Diesels AS WELL.
Volkswagen's own brand; Used to be Quantum RED (not sure if you can get this now)
Or any good brand ie;
Castrol GTD
Mobil Delvac MX
Texaco Havoline Diesel
etc

hope you don't mind me adding to this posting a little.
i'm about to do an oil and filter change too. i've found that the tiny hole in the tin sheet which protects the sump is barely enough to get a tool big enough to shift the sump plug.....it's got one of those 'hex' heads instead of being a square nut shape so I can't simply use a wrench.
I'll also need one of those filter straps to unscrew and replace the filter. I would like to give the engine a good cleaning too so while i'm draining the oil, I could stick some engine cleaner in, give it a good cleaning, drain the oil, refill it, add the new filter and off she/he/it goes for another 3,000 miles or so.
Am I being naieve in thinking that an oil filter is just that; an oil filter - either it filters oil or it doesn't? How do some manufacturers make 'better' ones?
(What I would give for a VW specialist in Brighton right now. I've found a garage (double expensive for anything but very thorough and upfront) and I now need a bodyshop and parts outlet. Amazingly enough (not) the bloke I bought my van from didn't mention the two large holes under the front door step rubbers. it was raining when I went to see it and I didn't think to ask to see the roof either. Now the paint and lacquer has peeled half way down the sides of the high top roof and i'm thinking about a total respray etc after 6 months of owning it! Needless to say that the four people who have since admired my van and who have bought their own, didn't do so from him!! That would be over £18,000 in total - not to mention recomendations and all of them now use the same garage as me too.)

Okay. Oil change done.
I used 15W40 semi-synthetic oil.
A filter which wasn't a Mann but one which Pfeiffer's in Hove recommended (starts with an 'H' maybe Hengst and is German VW/Audi approved) and after I bought one of those oil filter remover strap wrench thingies, I took off my old one, drained the oil (what's all that tinwork under the engine and exhaust all about, doesn't seem to be a great innovation as it's all in bits which are screwed together), refilled it and added some leak sealant fluid and job's a goodun.
Easiest thing to do. Change filter and oil cost is about £30 less than it would cost if a garage did it. If you're in Brighton and need a hand with this (every 6 months/ 5,000 average miles) i'll be happy to help you with it for a cuppa. Total cost about £35 for oil,filter and strap wrench, plus 20mins to do the job. We can use my strap wrench.

Morrisons diesel oil £6.99 for 4.5 ltrs! 
Wouldn't reccommed it for a good engine though, mines dying with it using 2.5ltrs every 300 miles, so putting the cheap stuff in it. Although done some miles using it and it doesn't seem to be killing the engine any faster than a branded oil would.
