Other than swapping my 1.6td engine to a 1.9 what's the best way of getting more power from the 1.6??
I'm not looking for more speed "mind you that would be good" I just need more grunt for pulling away specially at busy junction.

It some time feels like I could run faster!!!!!

Add an intercooler, turn up the fuel , watch your mirrors push back.

Big oil cooler, big intercooler/chargecooler, wind up the turbo boost, wind up the fuel pump fueling (try to avoid proving the big bang theory)

i put a 1.9 in mine and never looked back.
but i didnt have turbo in the first place, just a 1.6d, you think yours is under powered? at least you have a turbo

In that case I'd suggest you check first if everything is set up right as it is.

With the empty TD Syncro I have no trouble keeping up with town traffic, it's only in fourth where it starts lagging behind.

Thanks for all your info, I do fancy the intercooler and turn the boost up option rather than swapping engines for now, will need to find more info on this option?????

Don't think fuel is an issue look at the amount of black smoke I get when putting my foot down.

No but there are some bloody steep hills and to a 1.6 na they might as well be Everest:D

Not sure what message this sends out but I have a 1.6Td high top and I feel more or less the same about it as you do about your straight 1.6!!

I hardly notice anything I would class as being a 'boost' in power or a turbo 'cutting in' as it's probably more of an overall improvement than something which sometimes works at certain revs etc. No doubt there are more powerful turbos or whatever but one thing follows another and it may not be long before you find another job which will need doing to compensate for the boost.

I know my turbo is as new as the engine (about 4 years old) and that they sometimes give trouble but before you forking out loads, maybe consider what benefits this work will give you. Mine cruises at about 50-60mph and although it will go faster, something doesn't feel quite right as at 100-120Kph (German import), she's not as stable or efficient as when at a steady 80kph (about 2200-ish rpm in 5th on a flat run).

Now i'm considering changing the suspension by just enough to stop it flinching about when a lorry overtakes and for braking and cornering improvements. Am I the only one who drives in the 'lorry lane' on a motorway? So even though you could add a turbo to yours and you may well get a 'pull away at the lights' gain, what about the brakes...what about the suspension....tyres???

Just thought i'd share that set of thought processes with you as i've begun noticing the little...and sometimes huge refinements some folk have made to their T25's and i'm looking for ways to do the same. Part of me says it's just a campervan and another says it's so much like a car ( a great lolloping, bouncy car) in as many ways.

Mine cruises exactly the same but hit any hill and she struggles.
I've resinged myself to it and have learned to love her the way she is.
Who wants to get there fast anyway?

On a resent trip to Scotland we drove non-stop from Bristol to fort-William at a steady 100kph (60mph) and got 42mpg "which was ace" specially as I only got 18-20mpg out of my bay (1. so at the end of the day I'm a lot happier with the T25.

Like you Hynovan mine will do 70-75 but it's then working hard, but at 60mph it's happy plus I just sit behind the lorry's and stay out of the wind.

It's only the hills that slow mine down and that where a little more boost would help.

Other than that I'm over the moon with my westy, which I've had since March it's strange how in such a short time how I've gone off bay's, I loved my old bay but now I think why!!

You may want to try the front spoiler option also. Makes a suprising difference. I have heard some people say its the best £80 they ever spent. TBH, i fitted the spoiler at the same time i dropped the van 60mm - so i cant really comment. The overall driving experience is better. Not as comfortable - but a lot more solid on the road (i can still feel those lorries mind!).

Mines a Westy Atlantic so as a spoiler already so can't comment either but coming from a Bay anything was going to be better!

Gearbox ratios (5 speed as fitted to most TD) will give you around 20MPH per 1000 revs, so 3000 RPM is just about 60 MPh (tested with SatNav). Different size tyres will affect it one way or the other.

If you`re happy driving at 2200 rpm Hypnovan, then you`re only doing about 45 MPH (your speedo at 80KPH / 50MPH is around 5 MPH fast which is quite believable as they are set to read fast) this may be a tad slow for motorway traffic !

A standard 1.6TD (in decent condition) with the turbo boosting at what it should be (12 psi is top end of the limit instead of the 7 psi which is bottom end) and the fueling turned up to suit will be like driving a different `van BUT it`s very neccesary to improve the oil cooling using a large front-mounted oil cooler, and also an intercooler if possible (but not absolutely neccesary) for improved reliability.
