Meet a guy at Vanfest on Saturday selling his 2.1, 4 door, RHD 16" Syncro doka.

What? a 16" RHD Doka?

"Oh yeah I converted it. Not too big a deal. All the press moldings are there, took me about 10 days. And is factory quality. Put the extra door in too!"

I think you have misunderstood him.
Non of the preseed pices are there.You can tell where they are supposed to go by the deformations in the panels.Did you now that behind the front panel everything is different beetween left and right as well as beetween LHD and RHD.
No one has ever said it cant be done just not worth it.Not to mention the cost of 10 days labour in a workshop.Decause if it isnt done in a workshop with an engineers report you have no chance of legal insurance.
Even then insurance may be an ishue.

Because I asked him if it would have to be inspected & by who. He seemed abit vague about what would be needed.

Just out of curiosity which would be easier ...

- converting a left hooker to RHD

or

- converting a 14" to a 16"

14 to 16 with all the little extra strengthaning panells.

Oh, Russel, do you (I) need to stengthen the panels if going from 14's to 15 inch rims then?

BTW, I haven't forgotten the Re-con VC you told me you had a few weeks ago. How much are they?

No you dont have to make up and fit the extra panels if increasing ure tire size i was just stating it would be easier doing all of that than converting from LHD to RHD.

Why do you need an engineers report for a conversion?

There must be hundreds of beetles about that have been converted, I have never seen any paper work, or been asked by an insurance company if a car has been converted.

All they have ever wanted to know is if its left or right hand drive.

Well if you read your small print in your(any) insurance policy it is left up to yourself to inform your insurer of any modifications made to ure vehicle while ore before you have owned it.If you dont declare any of this no matter how small(even fitting alloys) and at some point you need to claim your insurance company has no legal right to honor the policy.It in fact makes your policy not worth the paper its righten on and liable claims can run into 6 figures!
Now with something as structual as swopping steering they will want an engineers report if they even entertain it.
Now ime not trying to be negative about this just trying to make people aware of sticking your head in the sand on insurance could end up costing you for years to come.
