Hi all, I've got a lovely T25 with a fried 1.6 standard diesel in the back lying at my family's garage, and it's awaiting surgery to fit a 1.9 1Y engine from a golf. My uncle's the mechanic there so I've scourged this forum and Brickyard to find any relevant details on performing such an operation, printed 'em off and handed him a ream of info and f**ked off back to Leeds in a borrowed motor to catch up on work (spent over a week back in Elgin before he told me the 1.6 was fried and missed a "pooh" of pay!)

Just spoke to him tonight and he's just got the 1Y, had a look at it and started meltdown:"what's these f**kin' wires, the pump's different, the clutch is different.....f**ksakes!! etc...."!! I told him that everything he needs to know will be in the notes I gave him, but I've a feeling that there's a bit of technophobia creeping in there- don't get me wrong, he's a bloody good mechanic from the old days, grew up on a farm fixing tractors and that, really can do anything to a car, but I think that a) the thought of reading through reams of posts to get to the info he needs is putting him off and b) he's panicking 'cos there's a few mods to be done....

So, is there anyone out there who's done this conversion who can be arsed to tell me all the bits I'm gonna need, and also any extra info he'll need? I have every faith that he'll do it right but I just wanna make his job as easy as possible- he'll be doing me a nice one and I'm not there to translate all the notes for him. The van has a 5 speed dog leg gearbox if that's any help...

Any help will be huuuugely appreciated..

Okay i did this conversion recently .If it has a bosch fuel pump you need to remove the black plastic box .Break it up as under it is the fuel cut off solonoid valve that is then connected to the ignition wire.Your mechanic friend should no the 1Y clutch&flywheel is removed and replaced with the JX 1.6 flywheel & clutch + a spigot bearing inserted to the crank end for the gearbox .The JX oil pump is fitted and sump.Its a very easy conversion and there are many T25 owners running them.I suggest look up on the forums for 1Y topics.

I've just spoken to my uncle and he says that there are 6 wires in total coming off the engine- how many should there be on a 1y? It's really frustrating 'cos I'm trying to do this over the phone, but they can't find any indication that it's even a 1y.........can anyone tell me where to find the code?

six wires coming off the 1.6n or do you mean the 1Y?The 1.6n has two oil pressure sensers & one water temp senser .Single heavy red + supply wire for the glow plugs & Alternator output terminal wire to batt and charge light wire swop fit to the 1Y engine.Ignore any wires off the 1Y injection pump apart from the single fuel solonoid connection which is under the plastic black box on the pump.Off which you need to connect the ignition feed wire to it.To simplify matters just swop over all where electrical connections are to the 1.6n to 1Y.Oh the code may be on the black cam belt cover but is stamped on the engine block where the fuel pump is.
