Dumb question from new owner....durrr

I am getting to know my recently acquired T25 Aircooled - finding out lots from this forum and website - great resource.

My first VW bus is a 1981 Westfalia pop-top - love the LHD on the Devon lanes where I live.

Now electrics are needing a bit of attention. Mileometer (actually kilometes) doesn't work (altho speedo does), can't yet fathom how to light the fridge, Eber heater fan works, but no heat, and leisure battery seemes knackered - only red lights on the thing by the cooker to show its power. So I will work my round this lot, using this website and past posts.

But now the question - I think I need to remove the leisure battery to replace it. Firstly, on a LHD van - is the leisure battery the one under the passenger or driver seat? And then I am stuck - the seats move forward, and swivel round 360 degrees. But under the flap behind/beneath the seat, the space doesn't seem big enough to get the battery in or out. I am sincerely hoping that you don't have to remove the entire seat frame to remove the battery. There must be a way??

Thanks in expectation

what fridge do you have, i have an 81 westy and to light
- turn gas on at the tank underneath the van
- make sure switch is in the middle
- I have a lever to the left i pump to get the gas going
- then push & hold in while pressing ignite button
- there should be a small round hole at the bottom left inside the fridge where you can see if it has lit

also worth getting a 12v carbon monoxide to check emissions

Eber heater fan works, but no heat, and leisure battery seemes knackered - only red lights on the thing by the cooker to show its power. So I will work my round this lot, using this website and past posts.

passenger

on my westy i have to slide the seats off, there is a small clip/lever to lift when you have slid it as far as it will go....undo the 4 bolts and lift the swivel base, should be able to move the base to one side and get to the leisure battery

a good starter battery will be fine to replace this if its had it. First get a multimeter and check if the L batt is charging when the van is ticking over

No such thing as dumb questions... as long as you learn for the answer.

The battery should be able to be removed by removing the seat, then turning the base around facing back. This should give you just enough room to open the cover and remove the battery. At least that's how it works on my 88

similarly on mine...but I don't have to remove the seat. Rotate it first, so seat back is facing the dash, then slide it towards the dash. Cabn open the flap and get leisure out! Just!!

Good luck

the eber won't work without at least 11 volts from the battery  the fan will go but it wont ignite without proper voltage.
