Can anyone please throw any help on sound proofing? I have a 1.7D engine and in itself sounds like a 1.7D I have a standard boot/engine cover as supplied but the engine noise is still quite loud when driving. 50mph, noisy, dip the cluch and freewheel and almost silence. Is this something I will have to live with or has anyone got any ideas please. There is a plus side I CANT HERE THE WIFE TALKING AT ME

my 1.9d is loud too - if you listen to an old Sherpa or Transsit diesel you notice they are loud too - old unrefined diesels are.

Just check your exhaust joints and manifold to be sure

Ask yourself what makes a noise on an engine, then check each item for serviceabilty ie:
Mechanically; tappet clearances, ancillaries (water pump, vacuum pump, alternator, drive belts) also pump timing (has it been altered at some point?) incorrect settings can make the engine very noisey.
Induction noise (through the intake) is it standard? are there leaks?)
Exhaust (condition, is it genuine are there leaks? is it catching?)
Cover Insulation (is it missing?)
Rear bulk head insulation (has anything been removed and not replaced?)
Also some Diesels had a lower engine cover to minimise noise bouncing back from the road. If yours had one of these covers then it does make a tremendous difference. (I'm really not sure which models etc)

Does your van still have all the acoustic padding on the underside of the engine bulkead (the slopey bit) and is it held in place. If so, make sure your seal on the engine lid is all good.

The three things I used to quieten my 1.9TD down was:

1. Fit fibre glass into the rear tailgate - this makes a massive difference.

2. Fit fibre glass into the side walls, upper & lower. (look for how to insulate you van in the wiki to make sure you put moisture barriers in! https://club8090.co.uk/wiki/Ca ... insulation )

3. Find an old rug or carpet & put two layers over the engine deck & down the slopey bulkhead (if you dont have seats/storage here).

I have a foam base & a futon on top of it over my engine bay & it's a lot quieter, plus your bed gets nice & warm on the drive!!

If you don't have carpet on the floor in the back, that will also make it noiser! Hard surfaces = noisy, soft = quieter!
