Any suggestions as to the optimum dimensions for a waffle board ?- I've been given some grid that seems suitable.

anywhere about 6ft long and just over a foot wide,it depends how you can carry em,and tie some strong rope to em for getting em out afterwards,cj.

is ther any difference between sand ladders and waffle boards or are waffle boards just plastic versions

waffle boards are designed for bridging. sand ladders are designed to spread weight to stop bogging down in soft(sand) areas.

waffle boards get there strength from the design , if you use em as sand ladders they will just sink due to the holes - weight of van will push em under surface(ok maybe not all the time but you get the idea)

sand ladders have a lot more surface area to reduce 'psi' weight on them but are A LOT thinner - use em for bridging and it will end in tears.

38mm waffles are alot cheapper than the 4xmm/50mm thick ones and are more than upto the job/weight bearing of a stinko .

so with a sheet of a ply attached to waffleboards you would have a dual purpose board??

cant see why not . guess you could just use sheets/strips of WBP ply on there own .
if you imagine the contact area of each tyre on the road isnt very big , size of a small plate and youve got 500kg on this area- you are exerting alot of PSI relative to putting the same weight onto say a 12" x 48" size area.

yep was thinking the same but could get away with thinner ply due to the strenght of the waffle boards
