Knocking at the back!!!

Hi,

Just back from a 2 weeks holiday in France.

The van has made it back but It has developed a knocking sound at the back!!
The knocking only starts when engine is hot. (after approx after 1 hour drive)
The water temp. is spot on. No overheating.
And it's worse when I accelerate and turn right!!
What do you think? Sounds familiar?
Driveshaft? Auto gearbox?

I drive a 1984 Type 25 Auto 1.9L petrol.

Thanks,

Mib

No clutch. It's an Automatic.
Actually, It could be the CV joints.

This sounds like cv joints. There is a quick cure for this noise. Do not take this diagnosis the wrong way. The grease around the balls has gone hard and allows them to knock together we find just pulling the rubber back and squirting a bit of oil usually liquidfys the grease to stop the noise. I call it the three legged horse syndrome as it sounds like a horse with one shoe.

Thanks Hayteam. I will check the CV joints.

What I find strange is that it only starts knocking roughly after an hour drive. Before that, nothing.
Any technical reasons for that?

Carefully slip a greasegun end under the boot and regrease with a suitable grease .... this may cure the problem ... most likely in the short term at any rate. Long term it's new CV joint I bet.

No problem BTW

Thanks Ian.

Are CV joints different for automatic vans?

Where can I buy them?

Cheers.

I think this is the one I got from JK http://shop.justkampers.com/product_inf ... ts_id/2750

I bought more grease as well (see wiki). It's a messy job but really satisfying once done. Strip them down (2 on either side of your van!) clean them, check them for wear, replace if required, repack with nice new grease :D (I would only buy one unless you are loaded!)

One thing if you do this! Be very careful removing the bolts as they can be a pig. They are fitted in pairs - with a flat piece of metal between them - If you damage the head of one of these and cannot turn it, remove the other one and use the metal piece to get it moving. I had 2 that I needed to do this on.

Also, the replacement bolts were 12 point spline(?) which is a rather special tool - luckily a neighbour had one to lend me! :D
