Noticed the other day that Al's prop has a rubber shock absorber incorporated into it... (1.6 diesel)

Mines solid from one end to the other. (1.9 petrol)

Why the difference?

1.9s don't have them, don't need them apparantly but the 2.1 and TDs troquey enough to require them seems to be vw thinking (it appears on some BMW props too I believe) but why the donut front on aTd and rear on a petrol I don't understand. GKN prop without donut seems fine on a good transmission 2.1 but I know a diesel which rings it heavily, eh Clive.
BTW I've just done a couple of front diffs and both had partially worn out spigot bearings inside their input shaft; one only 60k miles, the other unknown possible high miles, I checked a couple more on the shelf and one of those similarly worn even though the pinion bearing appears to be ok in all cases. VCs are heavy rotational mass, lots of inirtial loads as well as rotational and gravity plus the internal workings place a load on the transmission and as with the UJs and cvs and diffs contribute to and suffer from the whole drive chain wear.

So you could try a 2.1 prop then, to calm it down a bit, but as Aidan says, if there's significant wear in the transmission, it'll still rattle - swapped my original VW one back in and not as bad as the GKN one, which also being a longer tube has a slightly lower resonance than the VW one.

Sticking 3 sections of self-adhesive sound deadening bitumastic around it at half and thirds points (about 6" widths) works well, but will fly off if its isn't clamped with something like thin metal sheet... must be done very accurately and symmetrically.

As expected this worked beautifully till all the sheet came off... was as quiet as a lamb!
