Some interesting engine quotes from Go Westy

Spending far too much time surfing the background reading on the GoWesty site:

Some intersting quotes - from Lucas - the boss there (and someone who appears to know as much as most about Waterboxers and T25s).

The head gasket issue is a maintenance issue, not a design issue. If you have the coolant flushed out every two years with phosphate free coolant and distilled water the head gaskets will last the life of the engine which is 200-300k miles.

The life of a waterboxer engine varies considerably depending on use. We have seen well cared-for waterboxers in 2wd non-campers go 290k without failing seriously in any way. On average, the water jacket seals ("head gaskets") are good for about 140k,

we recommend premium fuel for any Vanagon fitted with any engine, even a normal original. These are BIG vehicles with small engines, and they have to work very hard. These engines do not have any "knock" sensors. So, if for some reason your engine experiences a sudden overheating episode, even a brief one, the extra octane may keep the fuel from knocking,

(This refers to 91 Octane fule - over 87-89)

Just though they may be interesting to others.....alternative views are also valid :D

The service interval is interesting at just 2 years. As I said in your other post, I checked the VAG service history for mine and I can find no service receipt/work carried out that includes coolant renewal. (same VAG dealership for 12 years)
