1.6 non turbo

I have a non turbo 1.6 in my 82 westy at the mo, how much BHP does this have? and what would be the increase in a 1.9td engine? I have read this area but I still don't know if it's worth changing the engine. I have just drove to Poole and back (450mile) and it takes a long time! I would like to sit at 70mph instead of 50mph, would a 1.9td do this? Sorry if this comes up all the time! (I know a mech that can change the engine) Please help :?

I would think a 1.9 td would easily cruise at 70, I know what you mean about the 1.6 na 55 is about the limit :D

from 50bhp to 75bhp and loads more torque

our little t25 1.6 d just came back from northern france yesterday from our holiday.... we were cruising most of the way at 60 mph and we still got reasonable fuel economy from it, and still enough to run around for the next few days as well. standard 1600 non turbo... not the quickest, and we were loaded up nicely with our kit - tents, duvets, airbeds food locker etc, as well as trolley jack and tools... had no real problems apart from uphills....roughly 366 miles from baie de somme (bay of the somme)

was absolutely brilliant all the way there and back the whole trip

As far as I know, changing the engine won't automatically give you better cruising speed.

Something to do with gearbox ratios and the 1.9TD not liking high revs.

The 1.9 will give you more power (and probably better acceleration), but in order to get higher speeds out of it I think you need to change the gearbox as well, or at least change the ratio of the highest gear.

Perhaps you are thinking of 1.9 Tdis?

1.9TD AAZ/ADE and n/a 1Y etc will spin to 4,000 and beyond OK. However long term crusing above 36~3800 detracts from fuel consumption and heat rejection increases rapidly with speed. (If de-govered they will rev above 5,000)

Increasing your wheel size to 15" with reasonable AR tyres to give a 5~8% increase in rolling circumference should be sufficient.

A proper up-front oil cooler might also be required with the 1.9TD engines.

Trust me, you will need to change the gearbox........I had a 1.6 Diesel g.box in my T25.....at 60mph the revs were painfully high....I changed over to a 5 speed petrol box........and peace was restored, and cruising at 70mph all day is now easy!!
I have a 1.9 TDI motor, but running a 1.9TD pump, so no wires (well one!) and no ecu hassles.....Motor runs great, the TDI is a far superior engine, makes less heat and starts first time in winter and I dont eve have the Glow Plugs wired up.......Done 26,000 miles trouble free motoring in two years.......I cant sing its praises enough !!!
Also, You will pay the same or less for a 2nd hand TDI engine, so really cant see the point in putting the older, hotter running, more thirsty TD engine in a bus anymore...........? (unless you want to tune it for big torque and power output.......but then...thats what Scooby conversions are for????

Yeh, HOT's right, I was thinking 1.6TD gbox not 1.6NA... which are lower ratio diffs.

But even more so when talking about a TDi which produces power lower than TD.

..and don't guess, wait till you have the engine you are going to use berore choosing the FD ratio and final tyre-size
