Apologies if this has been asked before, but at what point was power steering fitted as standard for UK vehicles, or was this always an option ?

I'm looking to buy a late ('88 on) camper next year. Would I be correct to assume that all conversions with an auto box would also have PAS ?

PAS is a must have in order to sell the idea to the wife. Any ideas on the % with and % without PAS.

you have a lot more chance of getting a lhd with pas.rhd with pas are very thin on the ground.and second hand rhd pas systems go for around £500.then unless your mechanically minded.you will have the added cost of having it fitted..

You really don't need pas. with the big steering wheel and the right pressure in the tyres they are easy to park

Thanks, I was beginning to think this might be the answer. We've all just got soft over the years !

Guess I just have to get my wife to try one without PAS and the issue goes away...hopefully !! I suppose the rule is to keep the steering wheel and road wheels standard.

no need to keep all standard my GF has moved the van and is a typical girly girl and she does struggle a little bit but she said she would soon be able to master it ! I own two vehicles and neither have power streering!

And standard steel wheels....

Fit a forklift type knob to your wheel. Best thing I ever did in terms of improving ability to turn corners. Besides, the extra work on the wheel is actually good exercise!

Mine is an '86 auto and it doesn't have PAS.
As mine is fitted with hand controls, I need a steering ball anyway..they're great! The proper steering balls can cost £40-50 (the quick release one in my car is about £50.00)
If you do fit a cheap one,I would check it fairly often for wear etc.
Mine is used all the time for driving (not just parking)....and hate the thought of one shearing off while rounding a bend..

Not just an option but an expencive option at that. We had it on our factory ordered GL and I think my dad said it cost over a grand for that option, maybe closer to 2k - goes a long way to explaining why its fairly rare. Twas nice though!

I got a RHD velle and a multivan with it an its lush! Still tryin to flog the velle tho if anyone wants it?
