Engine replacement - your recent - and historic experiences

We have lots of threads about recond engine producers and the bad examples/experiences some have gone through - and these are very informative and useful. Unfortunately you could take a conclusion from aggregating them together that none of them are any good - which doesn't seem representative/realistic.

I do think (hope?) that on the flip side there must be a heck of a lot of recons out there put in over the last few years that are going well and causing few problems - meaning happy owners.

Can we start a thread here for satisfied transplant owners - as I (and many others I am sure) would like to hear the positives.

I am interested in the obvious (Elite, Remtec, Vege and any others) and any independent engineers you may have used - but can we keep this thread a positive one please ;-)

Elite VW

2 recon 2.1s

1 has had no issues WHATSOEVER has been fully serviced and runs really nice. Now into its third year

t'other one had a minor oil leak...pushrod tube seals - seems a dodgy batch as reportedly several recent conversions all suffering from same thing. BUT has been replaced and sorted under the warrenty no problems. Other than this, all fine.

No problems with the customer service either.

2.1 dj VEGE fitted by a local guy
£1500, but fitted within a week of the old engine quiting.
Runs sweet, clean and about as economical as they come.

you all know the issues that i had with Elite ....well since having the bus back in July i have covered about 2000miles.
Ive had a leaky rocker cover Elite posted two new ones the same day.
Oil leak from drain plug solved when i took the bus in for a 500 mile service at Volkstop and recently a rattle from the engine that sounded like the waterpump turned out that the crankshaft pully was only held on by a few threads  sprayed a bit of oil out but tightened up all seems well.
Hopefully thats it
I would not do on the cheap again but for what i paid the bus runs ok and its nice to get out without thinking will it make it!

Elite, about 18 months ago. Cost a grand (had some extra bits and pieces done). All good still running smoothly.

I don't care what anyone says about "how can they possibly do it for such a low price, blah blah blah". The point is the engine was utterly f***ed before they had it and since it's been back it's soooooooo sweet.

Good on ya Elite!!!!

and the cyl head from the other side looks like this although the pistons are fine.

oh, and the rockers didn't have any washers under the 11mm nuts holding the shafts down and no trace of the wire pushrod tube retainers ever being there either.

Puzzled - why are Elite a good £500 cheaper than anyone else for a 2 litre CU?? Others quote £1495 plus fitting - one VW specialist said two days labour!! But Elite - just looked it up - say £950 plus £150 fitting - where's the catch?? Or are REMTEC and VEGE just a rip off?

You see, my CU engine seems fine, but it has that well known little fault of a flashing oil pressure light at idle after a run. So, I am going to have to save up and hold a contingency fund for when it dies. Sounds very sweet at the moment though, and doesn't seem overtly to have any problems??

Back to the point though - I am thoroughly worried/disappointed that the CU engine seems to be the most expensive of the lot to replace. Why????

2.1 DJ originally supplied by Elite VW, fitted Mayday Bank Holiday. 7,500 miles later it's so far so good, occasional oil drip from one rocker cover (irritatingly ongoing  ) and very occasional oil drip down the thread of the pressure by-pass. Otherwise nothing significant to report.

I do my own servicing.
