Engine 1y N\a diesel

Hi all I hope someone can help. We are in italy and have a problem with our van

Suddenly, in the morning after a rest of 8 hours, the van wont start. I find out that the pump had no fuel in it. I poor fuel into the pump and she starts. Once running, it drives fine.

If we stop the engine for morethan 2-3 mins, its either very hard to start, or I have to go and poor diesel into the pump and re'prime again.

We eventully got fed up with this and called aa europe and got recovered. the local VW dealer says its the pump and will cost 1000 Euros for a new one, plus fitting! hes just charged me 100 euro to temp fix it.. which actually was him showing me how to poor derv in the pump! argg!

The van was running fine, before, showed no symptoms, poor running at all. The only thing i did notice is that injector 1 is wet (after a 100 mile run), smells like diesel, all other injectors are dry.

If anyone can help, Id love to know. Is it a fixable problem? definty the pump? injector?

One way or another, stopping the engine is causing all the diesel in the pump to diaapear.. !

any other info that will help.. I can try and find. Il in the cafe here for another hour, ..

I'm far from being an expert or even a mechanic ...but to me it seems that the pump is working just fine.

Something else has sprung a leak and lets in air while you're parked and the diesel just runs off somehwere (or back into the tank).

Make sure that all the fuel lines (to the pump, from the pump) and also the return lines on the injectors are good and tight.

Once you can't actually find anything there, you'll probably have to find a good diesel mechanic (not the guy you last spoke to)

I don't know if they have Bosch service stations in italy ...one of them would probably be your best bet.

Checked all that cant find any leaks. I speak no italian so finding a garage seemed to be an effort.

um milan is the closest. Im just trying to note downthe numbers, hopefully will get lucky and get a english speaker. so far the girl in the co op speaks more eng that the VW guy did!

Reason why I recommend Bosch is because in Germany that's who the VW garage calls when they find out that there is no connection for the diagnostic system on the T25

Plus they should have injectors and/or spares for the pump in stock or very close by.

"Localita" is the where you enter the place name.

The search function is supposed to give you a 40 km radius, but this seems to be borked ...I can only get results within 10 km.

Depending on where you are exactly, you might get better results.

Make sure to aim for the ones with "diesel" in the name, because these days Bosch do everything and anything and the wrong service station might be of no more help than your VW guy

You say injector 1 is wet? Maybe thats where the leak is?

As someone has already said, sounds like you have a leak in the system. This could be in the injector pipes or fuel lines.

Took me ages for me to find the problem when it happened to me was the fuel filter plastic connector thingy (on the return) had cracked. I didnt find it, someone suggested i try changing the filter - and it worked!

Try nipping up the injectors - in fact, take of the pipe for the injector 1 and re-do it up.

If the van is running after you do get it started then obviously the pump is fine.

If you do get to a diesel garage they will be able to change your fuel filter and lines (just the ones in the engine bay at first)

Top tips to aid priming: Loosen the return banjo on the pump while cranking - this makes priming the system a lot easier - but have someone at hand to nip it up once started!

Also, the AA did an awesome job of translating for us when we had a split water hose in Spain. We just phoned them up and said "can you ask this garage to do this for us" - they phoned back and two days later we drove to the garage and got it fitted.

hi all thanks for the replys, after a dead end as the guys didnt speak any english, and otherproblems, i was really stuck, however, a day later, starting the van by re priming the pump, i found the leak, the top hat, block off was split ever so slightly. fixed that and alls been well.!

easy hey, however, 2 vw dealers, 2 aa guys all missed it too so i cant be too hard on myself.

any how. holidays pretty much over now.. looks like head gaskets just gone, another trip to another vw garage and hopefully aa euro breakdown will tow her home.!!
