Tachometer "conversion"

Hello,

having put a diesel motor in place of the old petrol motor in my van, my petrol tacho no longer works, as there's no coil for it to pick up it's pulsed feed from. I've been looking for a diesel tacho for about three months now, with no luck at all...so, is there any way to convert a petrol tacho to work with a diesel engine? As I understand it, the diesel tacho figures out the revs from the alternator (although that seems a bit hit and miss to me...can anybody confirm that?) Could I knock together some bit of electronics which converts the voltage output from the alternator to a pulsed signal? Has anybody got any idea what the Volts-to-pulses conversion rate is?

A bit of a long-shot I know, but any thoughts will be much appreciated.

Cheers :)
