Hi,

I have a missing central locking motor in the left hand door on my new van.

I've been searching Ebay and found loads of generic locking servos.

Has anyone had any joy with the cheap motors/servos from ebay?

I know I need a 5 wire one. Do I need longer stroke than 50mm?

I think they are 4 wire.

Yes Tony all the rest of the system is OE VW. I was planning on grafting in a generic slave motor for now.

I'm also toying with the idea of running a new remote lock kit through the original VAG wiring. I was hoping to reuse some of the original motors

And the answer is ....

u can't use generic 5 wire motors from ebay. Spent hours trying to get it working. The bottom line is you need the extra switch in the VW motor to de-energise it after it's switched.
The generic motors only have the one switch and you can't wire them to de-energise properly.

I got it working but the constant drive on the motor would flatten the battery in minutes. I could have added a relay possibly but gave up in favour of a VW unit if I can find one

Didn't spot this one, yes your right its not possable to add aftermarket motors to the VW setup - the problem is because the T3/T4 ones use 4 wires instead of the usual 5 and the signals are always live so the motors themselfs have to decide when to shut down, also have a perminant earth instead of changeing polarity for lock/unlock.

The cleaver (supereour) thing about the VW setup is the slideing door will still lock apon closure even if the van is locked while the door is open because the lock signal remains untill the van is unlocked so the slider picks it up when the door contact conects. You could replace all the VW motors with aftermarket ones and modify the loom (add an extra wire between the cab units and miss the earth conection off the others) but it'll never do the door close thing as the lock/unlock signal is usally only 1 second long.

Its possable some other vehicles with sliding doors and C/L might have a simular lock setup (high/later spec mazda bongo, toyota previa or mitubisi delicia perhaps, hopefully people are choping them up) but your best bet is look for another genuine motor for a T3 or T4 (basicly the same apart from the plug, VW did an adaptor loom to retrofit them as replacement parts).

got an original door motor, left side in working condition here, also got a bnib T4 one but I don't have the adapter loom, but that's available from VW.
T3 motor and mounting bracket £25 inc del.
T4 motor no bracket £30 inc del.

I tried to put a remote keyless kit in yesterday. With my one motor missing and the rest of the system working you would think it was easy...

Found out my only "working" door motor on the drivers door had a faulty motor. Took it apart and the motors armature has disintegrated.. the switches were working OK though.

So I need two front door motors now, or a pile of old ones to make two good ones! I'll give you a bell in the morning Beaker about those motors for sale..
