petrol hoses and pipes

(I is a 1.9 DG)
My 'little overflow' when the petrol tank gets close to the top of filling has been promoted up the list of tall orders and began last weekend.
Tank looks fine, the breather hoses haven't a jubilee clip between them and the rubbers cracked . Thought I'd replace them.
What I wanted to know was The larger breather pipe 10mm? that joins across the top of the tank into the, grommett ed connecters. This is a solid pipe, made of harder plastic , no clips again! Can this be replaced with a more hose like hose, fitting the hose with minimal slack, or do I need to source a more rigid VW pipe part. The current pipe seems to foul and has 'shaped' around the various bits above it (gearshift )
If you know what I mean.
Can I use flexi fuel hose as likely to be found at Halfords?
