Do I need to fit an air filter hose that is missing

Hi
I have an 2l CU Aircooled westy
I notice on most of these engines the air hose that ran from the red arrow into the side of the van is missing.

Im wondering if I should fit some flexible ducting to replace it.
I have LPG fitted and the unit partly blocks the bottom of the right hand grill where the air should enter the engine, so Im thinking maybe i should fit some ducting and shove it up the grill to get more air to the engine.
At one time this must have been fitted but I have not seen an Aircooled yet that still has this, are they removed for a reason?
cheers

No, if it was needed I would have put it back, do not fit this unless you want to suffer from ram air effect.

I've got one of those fitted - it goes round to the rear corner, so it gets nice and fresh and cool air, or so I thought....
What's there to suffer, Steve?
Also IK - you seem to have a rubber pipe from the stub, front right of the airbox going thro the bulkhead - I wondered what this stub was for years ago, asked around and blanked it off. What does yours do?

Hi cumbriankeith
do you mean the one that looks like it has a slight green tinge?
not sure I think its a breather pipe, was there when i bought the van
are you LPG'd? do you have a photo of your engine with the air pipe?
is it just pushed up into the air vent passage? also is there anything on the end of it that goes into the air vent to direct air into the pipe?
cheers

Yes it should be there as cumbriankeith says it picks up cool air which is denser which gives more cylinder filling and more power.

'Ram Air' is an effect that causes open loop LPG vehicles to stall or run lean. The system is set up stationary and the effects of air ramming into the air intake cannot be accounted for during set up. Certain marques suffer badly from this, the mixture goes lean so the air intake is directed away from the grille. 'Stalling' as the vehicle slows down is a particular symptom of open loop systems suffering 'ram air effect'. Thats why the intake tube is removed or directed elsewhere.
