CV boot sizes?

Has anyone else had trouble getting the right size replacement CV boots?

I noticed one of mine was split while prepping for the MOT, and went to my usual local parts shop where they know what they're doing and look after me, and to my surprise they had one in stock, and it looked right at a glance.

A couple of days later I got to fit the part; removed driveshaft, got it on the bench, cleaned it all up, separated the shaft, removed old boot, offered up new one- too small!

Back to shop, they check their parts listing and it's right, but they phone their supplier who tells them their listing is wrong and gives them an alternative part number, which also surprisingly they have in stock. This one looks too big though, and getting it home I quickly confirmed that.

The original replacement was 90mm diameter, the second one was 110mm diameter, and my CV joints are 100mm diameter!

Back to shop again, where they checked all their suppliers and all of them listed the same part number. So has anyone else had this problem?

Luckily, as I say they know what they're doing and checked through to find one of the correct size - typically though this one was £10 dearer and not in stock so I had to wait for that.

Anyway the good news in the end was that the newly-lowered Sammy the Surf Bus passed the MOT (at the second bite; the emissions were originally 0.13 over, half a turn of the mixture screw fixed that). So we should be fit for at least another year's motoring!

In order of where I would get the bits... Brickworks, GSF and JK do the correct ones... and to be fair it sounds like the parts listings are incorrect in there books... (or they have looked it up incorrectly) the same boot has been used since 1968 for the "transporter" and only the syncro uses a different one on the outer front, or if its a 16" version the rears.... the "90" would be beetle, the "110" prob the 16"

A parts place once argued with me when I enquired after 4 new rear cv joints, saying "I was wrong and they were not all the same and there wasnt any inners" soon put him straight when i said I bet you 10000 quid if you come and look underneath you will see I AM right and your book and knowledge are "pooh"..........

Well clearly those specialist outlets will have the right ones, but my local place doesn't charge me carriage, and normally gets them within 24 hours, as in fact they did.

I have to wonder whether one of the original parts I was given was in the wrong box, and I may have to check with the supplier.

At least my shop won't argue that they know better than me! They know a lot - never ceases to amaze me - but they also know that I know my cars.
