Do any of you take off the external cover of your fridge vents in summer? We have a vague memory of being told we should do this by the bloke we bought the van off, but to be honest he told us so much cr*p we don't know what to believe!!

Some fridge vents have winter covers that fix onto them, like these:

Afaik, you were told right . . . these winter covers should be removed when using the fridge so that it gets a good supply of air to cool the element on the back of the fridge.

I leave the lower one in place unless it is a very hot day or running on gas. If its peeing down with rain I leave them both on and just prop them open slightly. Mine allow some venting and air circulation when fitted though.

I have a JK vent at the top and a lower vent in the floor. I found water entered the JK vent in a downpour so I superglued a 30mm wide plastic strip across the back at the bottom so as to direct water outside.
orks so far...

Any tip that stops water getting in is well worth using! The Autohomes are notorious for rotten floors and rotten lower panels.

...and Autosleepers didn't do any better with the fridge vent IMHO. Have yet to see one with a proper rust free seam under the fridge.
And it never came with a cover.
Next job coming up.....

Mikey, posted a thread on Fridge vent covers in this forum. If you haven't got one check the thread out.

Thanks for the info everyone. We'll remove them next time we use the van. Mind you, we haven't had any proper "warm" weather since we bought the van 2 years ago!
