you can get some brackets that fix to the side of the poptop that give you a small section of gutter to fix a rack to. look at my homeboy( ) jakes white westy to get the idea

Anyone tried extending a regular roofrack to gain extra height? my canoe weighs about 60lbs and I'd be worried about the stresses on the Westy poptop

There is actually not as much weight as looks on the pic...

It is on my list somewhere to add additional support brackets - similar to Reimo poptops, perhaps in the form of gas struts... long list though!

I had the brackets made up to match original ones - actually messed up slightly and should of had them made shorter so the roof basket sat lower by and ince - but its great for shoving water bottles under!

Westfalia Roof Rack?

A geezer is selling the fittings on ebay, that attach to the pop top. Then you attach a standard gutter fixing roof bar set on to the fixings. I am thinking about this myself, just to get the sufrboard on the roof and out of the van. If you go for it, let me know how you get on.

Just type westfalia in the ebay search or go straight there with this link

You could try one of the inflatable racks.

Futbus has been talking about making custom racks for westy poptops so maybe worth sending him a PM or contacting him via http://www.futbus.com/

Jed - what conversion is your old van with the pop top? I want to fit a pop top to my syncro and am trying to decide which one to go for bearing in mind the need for a decent roofrack etc...

Hey guys, what about these?

http://www.roofrackshop.com/Car-Product ... 0827p.aspx

I brought some about 6 months ago but am not sure that the pop top will take the weight of a kayak (2man) without the westy type ones that sit in the gutter of the van?

Thoughts?

I ve got some of those brackets on my joker pop-top and there are plenty of cheap bars on flea-bay-I got a pair for £25 inc delivery - just make sure that they are wide enough - t25s are wider than the average car.

Re. weight - all i put on the rack is the surf board - and even then there is a bit of flex - you might have to get an extra couple of brackets so you have 3 roof bars - there not cheap though - mine came with the van but i ve seen them up for £60.

The alternative is to get a rack that fits to the original gutters with an extension to take it above the pop-top - plenty of commercial vans one will suit. The major prob with this set-up though is that you can pop the top with the rack on.

Good luck
