ok folks, been aving problems with the rad fan on the camper.
A reg converted panel, bullet fuses. One big grey relay, and one connected added to the relay bar at the end - for what purpose, I am not sure.

Anyways, finally sorted it so that the test of the main 3 spade connector revealed fan works in both speeds.

But still didn't come on.

So, just to make sure, replaced thermoswitch.

Now what I think is an electrical burning smell (very faint) on occassion in cab. Not there before. Opened fuse box....think smell was there, and the big grey relay at the front was warm.

Relay's shouldn't get warm, should they? Will take van number 2 to work today and see what that relay does!

Will get another....what do I ask for?

Bit tricky this one, I have only the later fusebox, (and Haynes) to go by.

Haynes photo of early fuse box shows what looks like the grey relay you mentioned as X contact (load reduction)
It is pictured second relay from left but with an unused space between the two.
If that is your relay, (again my Haynes wiring diagram seems to me to be a bit lacking), but I believe that relay is operating all the time the ignition is on....... so I guess may feel a bit warm.

What makes you think that your radiator fan is not operating. Haynes quotes a temperature of 93 C to 98 C at the thermoswitch on the radiator to cut in the first speed, 99 C to 105 C for the second speed, (carburettor engines) which is pretty warm.

That sounds as if it could be the relay for the fan.

Probably a 30 or 40 amp four blade single pole normally open relay.

thanks for the help! Haynes is very deficient!

That one on the end could also be an indicator relay, coz I am damn sure there is only one relay on the bar....and next to it *SHOULD* be the indicator relay. Will have to look at colours of wire....

If the load reduction unit is always warm.....then what is making the faint smell? (rhetorical question!)

Have got the T3 Vanagon manual as well....the wiring diagrams are a bit better, and I am starting to understand them OMG!!!!

So, will do some more looking and tracing of wires....and update!

Thats easily checked just put your fingers on it while operating the indicators or hazard lights, and you will feel it clicking.

I was thinking that the one on the other end is it? may be the (add on?) fan relay.

sorry - I should have been clearer.......I am sure there is NO relay in the indicator relay spot.....hence the *should*! However, the indicators and hazards flash, and you can hear it clicking in the fust box, so its in there somewhere.....
