Why do gas fridge flues have an open hole at the back?

I've got a Electrolux 3 way fridge.
I'm sure there's a very good reason - but can someone please explain to me why the little metal angled T piece that sits ontop of the fridge flue has an open end that faces the back of the fridge? (The other end is inclined and fits the pipe that vents to the outside of the van via the external flue piece).
I know heat rises etc, but I'm just kind of scared that some of those poisonous exahaust fumes will find their way out of this hole (and stay in the van), rather than up the proper inclined exhaust channel and outside. So much so, that I'm considering replacing this piece completely and using some of the eber exhaust ducting instead.

you need the "T" bit, or the flu wont work, if cooler air cannot be pulled in the "T" the hot fumy air wont leave, its all to do with air pressure, and is exactly the same as those old chimney pots that were the same shape, to help carry the fumes out, by reducing air pressure at the point where the "T" joins the flu, thus making the fumes move faster......same theory are a air plane wing
do not remove it, or you will have problems

I believe the idea is that if a strong draft were to blow directly into the outlet pipe the back pressure would escape throught the other end of the "T" rather than either blow out the flame or blow fumes back where they are not welcome.

No I would strongly advise against replacing it with a non "T" pipe for the following reason:

I've used a bit of ebber ducting after replacing my interior; the fridge is in a slightly different position now. However I connected the ebber tubing after the t-piece. Glad I did it that way now that I know there is a reason for that wee gap.
