Apologies for the bone questions but this is my first T25 and my first watercooled flat four and yes I did try the search option. Picked up my new ride Tuesday this week and she survived the 200 mile trip home so things aren't so bad although I do have a couple of minor niggles. Its a 91 Vanagon with a 2.1 Wasserboxer which leads me on to my first question

1. How can I tell what the engine code is either SS/MV or DJ and are they that different??

2. What is the best way to remove the CAT ? Is a Decat pipe required or can I just remove it and slide the muffler up as the flange looks the same

3. The radiator fan was working fine up until last night when it started to become noisy !! It still switches on and off but now makes a right racket. It sounds as if its either loose or a bearing is knackered any ideas. How do I access the fan ??

4. There is an oil leak from the back of the engine not sure if the filler neck is fitted correctly it seems to tight to get it over the lip pics below .

And finally

5. The other possible source of a leak is the pipe just below the alternator that goes into the engine look like a piece of rubber has been gashed on with jubilee clips!! Is this for oil or water?? extremely poor pics below

Engine nuber should be stamped into the metal at the bottom of the breather tower.....open hatch, look down and towards the right...black plastic tower? Bottom of that.

My cat is black and furry, and is removed by a swift prod. Guess this isn't the type of cat you are on about :D

Oil leak - haven't a clue!

That bit of pipe - pretty much sure that looks standard. Dunno what it does, though.

Radiator fan....behind radiator! Grills off, disconnect coolant pipes, disconnect rad electrics, undo bolts, lower rad. Fan in shroud mounted to rad. Dunno if there is an easier way that doesn't involve removing rad?

HINT>>>>>> buy a haynes or Bently double quyick!!

Welcome to the world of T25.

That pipe is water.
I would at a guess at the pics and say it`s a MV.
You have a data sticker in the cab area that will give you the code.
