How can I increase the horsepower of my 1600 cc diesel manual engine of my 1989 transporter camper?

Increase the fueling and the air getting into the engine, more fuel and air = more power. If it`s a normally aspirated 1.6D then you`ll struggle, if its a turbo diesel there`s quite a bit to get it going, none of which is cheap if you want reliablity.
There is no substitute for cubes

Bigger engine is the cheapest reliable option.

Oil cooler, intercooler, turbo wastegate bleed valve, then add some extra fuel..
Ebay Item no. 260265254227
Ideal intercooler
How does your engine go at the moment, you've barely said what it is, but we're presuming being '89 its a JX 1.6TD.
Alt Engines is really the place to get a better answer on this...
and Wiki on Diesel engiens also has a few tidbits

I'd say fit a bigger engine. I know what you are suffering though as we met a chap on holiday last year who was taking a mental breather after staggering up a series of hills in second gear in Devon with a long line of vehicles including cara-spit-vans! My 2.1 waterboxer flies up hills towing my boat without batting an eyelid. Mind you I pay for it in petrol. I believe you can run yours on old cooking oil can't you?
Cheers
Ken

The 1.9s do give it 'longer legs' but in good tune and condition, with a few mods, the 1.6 is no slouch!

I can vouch for that-my old van was quite reasonable apart from the long hills-at worst it allways held around 40 on motorway hills.
Unless your running a much bigger engine they should run around the same as any other bay/split van

I ran a golf SB engine in my crew cab. Cheap and cheerful and 80 BHP.
Ian at Synchronutz is really the guy to speak to if you're serious about a good conversion.
