Hiya,

I changed the gearbox oil the other day and put in 4 litres of the good stuff (level with the bottom of the fill plug).

When I went to the lube suppliers to replace Al's oil they showed the syncro petrol box as needing 3 litres and the diesel needing 4 litres... What the blithering heck?

I wouldnt trust what the "lube suppliers" are saying..
Ask Aidan...
He told me to use the Fuchs Titan 75w90 GL4/5 available from GSF and pour 4.5L into the fresh rebuilt box...

Yes, 4.5 or very close, or overfill a new one on the floor and take level plug out when in vehicle and all on the level (spirit level on floor or loadbed I think should do it) and let it drip down...
Ah, replace the level plug :)

I'd ring them and tell them they are giving out 'dangerous' and potentially 'expensive' erroneous information !

I'm sure I've read somewhere that a rebuilt i.e "new" box is 4.5l and a drained "used" box is 4l as theres some sort of resevoir of oil in there...

Yup, don't think its much to do with diesel or petrol or 3 litres though..

the figures they are giving are factory spec for the four speed 2wd box, but even there I'd recommend four litres regardless. The petrols with less torque run less oil for a smoother gearchange supposedly, but the syncros are 4.5 litres from empty regardless of engine.
