I'm sure this has been asked before...

Is it REALLY worth going to LPG? I have heard the following down points for it and am wondering if it is worth bothering with

* I hear that it uses 3 times more fuel than petrol (yes yes I LPG know is cheaper but if it's 3 times less explosive...!)
* As per above MPG goes down on gas
* Burns out spark plugs way faster
* Takes around a year or so to pay for itself
* You have to run on petrol every now and again otherwise valve guides etc become dry (meaning possibility of advancing engine wear)
* Some insurance companies are funny about LPG conversions (even ones with certificates of installation)
* LPG prices are bound to rise over the coming year or two making it even less cost effective

Am I being a bit/have I heard too many negatives for it?!

Somebody is having a laugh with you.

I have noticed a 7% loss of MPG with my 2lrt CU, Gas paid for itself in 6000 miles. no issues with spark plugs/insurance.
I do switch to petrol now and again if im going up a big hill or fancy a bit of oomph.

LPG prices are bound to rise over the coming year or two making it even less cost effective.

and petrol is set to stay the same

Look, whoever told you that is absolutley correct, don't convert to LPG, far too many people are catching on and there aren't enough LPG stations near me to satisfy the demand.....stick to petrol......please! Every polish car around here is on LPG and half the time I can't get it! OK, might not go to heaven but want my LPG readily available and cheap.

It was a relative who works for Notts council - he also says they have had nowt but hassle with all the LPG converted vehicles that the council run - to the extent that some of them have had the LPG system disabled!

no it is the same as petrol

nope had the same ones in for three years now

Nope.... the waterboxer engine is different to uprights... it was almost designed to run on LPG

So there is some truth about the Govt thinking - hmm we could do to LPG what we did to Diesel around 15 years ago.. tax tax tax to the point it that costs nigh on the same as petrol to run

was typing my last reply when you posted that - didn't know about that law - maybe that's one reason to convert the old Aircooled beast...

Speaking of Aircooled conversions what about heaters for the LPG in exhaust systems do they interfere with the heat exchangers? I would expect some sort of electrical heaters (similar to those used in CO2 welding) for a/c?.....

not at all.lpg is non polluting unlike derv.hence the high price of derv..and tell you relative hes/shes talking tosh...

Only if every one starts using it......dangerous stuff lpg, blows up unexpectedly .....don't bother.....take your mates excellent advice. Hail mary three times....etc, etc.

Your going to upset me and disregard your mates and my advice......but seriously, been on LPG for 10 years and no problems, my colleague enquired about his car and was told it couldn't be converted due to engine failure problems, there are a few that are unsuitable for conversion but the great majority of users are very happy bunnies every time they fill up.

regarding tax... LPG is relatively taxed more than Petrol..

Safety wise lpg is better ... the tanks have an in-built blow-off so in the event of a fire and increased pressure it leaves the tank through a relief valve outside the vehicle WAY before it 'blows up'.

Methinks this is someone with either a vested interest or very little knowledge. I'll be amazed if lpg users, like me, don't get asked most, if not every time you fill up "How much ? where ? and how ?"
