ok guys, after keenly following the awning posts we bought one of the above.

pitched in the garden twice and all seamed well but on our first camp it blew a gale and the bedroom support pole snapped.


bought a new one and then whilst pitching it at bvf the new pole bent. i`ve checked the pictures on the website and i`m sure i`m fitting the pole correctly, i`ve e.mailed khyam but a week has gone by and no reply.

has anybody else got any concerns or issues with this awning

I have got the same awning, the rear pole caused us a good deal of confusion, as we failed to realise that you have to have it in the position where it carries a great deal of tension, and is quite hard to pitch by yourself.

Ours has not snapped though, but I shall be particularly careful from now. Has the plastic ends snapped or the pole.

it was the pole itself that snapped. i thought i`d been pitching it wrong origonally but when i pitched with no tension on the pole it didn`t work properly.
haveing bought the new pole i have been very carefull when fitting it to the pitched tent but no matter how i do it i feel the strain is too much and it has bent slightly again so i`m not very happy.
these awnings are very expensive and i expected the best.

i seemed to have missed that post but atm no reply from khyam for us.

Never had any trouble with our Motordome Classic ... and believe me it's seen some fair old weather over the years.

I'd hazard a guess that "It's not what you've got it's how you put it up !"

well i`m open to suggestions i`m not one of these guys who can do no wrong, i was born a human being and therefore aint perfect but i`ve tried to fit that rear pole allways, adjusting the length of the poles,fitting it before pegging down, after pegging down and there just seams to be too much tension on it when it bows.

fitting it without tension on the pole solves the problem but causes another in that the outer tent sits on the inner tent then, if there was a couple of inches longer in the width of the tent it would be ok but thats not adjustable as the bottom pole ties are not adjustable.

OK, here's how a Motordome Classic goes up ...

Erect dome, place in position, attach to camper and pull back until joining bellows are taught, peg four feet in position, peg 4 main guylines down tightly through both elastic and cord loops. If neccesary peg down remaining guylines.

By now the kettle should have boiled and all's well with the world.

the classic does not have the bedroom compartment pole that is causing us the trouble. in fairness the main body of the tent is easy to pitch and is very sturdy in the wind.

its just come to me. i think i`m going to drill another hole in the pole leg and see if that helps with shorter poles it`ll need to bend less.

No Phone Number, I'd call that unacceptable and escalate this rapidly...

Companies this size selling products such as these should be able to provide a telephone query service... or at a minimum answer emails inless than a week, specially during the summer camping season, they've just dropped a good couple of notches in my estimation

But write asap - that's my advice, you shouldn't have to go drilling holes in anything!

Here is a picture of ours at Fox and Goose. It was the first time we put it up and the bar wasn't under too much tension here.

Strikes me that these 'fancy' motordomes are the problem, certainlt not the original one.

The pole or the joint?

We had one of those outer joints for the bedroom poles break - the same weekend that the old Sprags took off at Coney Farm and the winds got the clubs tents at ?Pickering?

But ..Lee... you do know those joints are fitted 'backwards' to how they look, so that the cross-pole is bowed upwards and outwards and under a degree of bending, which pre-loading reduces as weight comes on it?

This also allows the rain to fall off the bedroom, as there then is no sagging.

We even once had one joint one way up and the other, the opposite way, making the whole thing skew-wiff, probably the time it broke in those gale-force winds.

Seem to remember there was a spare (joint) included, so bought another one to replace the spare and later found it was for a smaller diameter pole, so there are two sizes of joint and pole - one for gazebos and one for the tents.

steve and bev your pole is fitted wrongly acording to khyam.as harryman states its not under tension as it is and as such you`ll not get a problem with the poles bending.

try fitting it the other way and you`ll see what i mean.

the pole that keeps bending is one of the uprights the middle poles bows nicely and returns to straight no probs.

will take on the advise of writing a letter and send it registered just so the query is logged.

I think I've seen problems in that area with someone else's Khyam awning tent.. had paid the Full whack and a bit annoyed that the bedroom part never seemed to fit the poles or the webbing holes very well..

Makes me think possibly their production tolerances are not being kept tight emugh? On the webbing straps, the eyelet psitioning or even pole lengths, latter easy enough to compare. Perhaps a tape measure on the webbing might reveal something?

Still think its very naughty not to handle email queries though - these are not cheap tents!
