ANSWER - WINDSCREEN! -
NOT ALLOWED!
wiper arm - on drivers side - seems to 'flop' after driving for a while (no metaphors please)!
- i've tried tightening the 10mm nut at the stem of the wiper arm - still slides downwards after driving -
is there a linkage under the dash i should be looking at? easy/difficult?
as always - all comments appreciated -

edoh,
Before getting too involved.......... it is
probably just that the wiper arm, which is made of a soft metal , is slipping on the splines (which are a harder metal) of the shaft (spindle) which drives it.
You could try taking off the wiper arm on the drivers side and running the wipers to check that the splined shaft on that side is operating.
May just need a new wiper arm if it is, or you may be able to clean up the splines on the drive shaft (spindle) and refit the old wiper arm. I think the arm tends to bite into the drive shaft as you torque the nut, to give sufficient grip to overcome friction of the screen surface.
Don't panic captain Mainwaring !!!!

funnily enough I have just changed the drivers side spindle due to the exact thing. parts still available from vw aswell. I took the whole linkage with the motor out. theres a few screws to remove from the top of the dash and one from behind the glovebox. I followed mr haynes and removed the instrument panel and glovebox but apart from that was fairly straight forward.
good luck
