Non-existant idle speed and backfiring - please help!

[All in relation to a standard injection 1.9DG with a gasure LPG conversion]

In preparation for next weeks holiday I undertook some routine servicing at the weekend, for the first time. I changed the oil and filter no problem, putting in some lovely thick 20w50 and had the Chuckles purring like a well fed cat. I then moved onto the Dizzy, HTs and spark plugs which is where trouble has started.

I fitted Bosch WR7DC+1s, took off the nipples so the HT set from GSF (the £14 set) fit and used a Beru VK355 dizzy cap. The van was not happy and needed a couple of centimeters of throttle just to tick over, and was backfiring when the throttle was pumped. I decided to fit a new rotor arm as well and the problem continued. The problem also continued with the old dizzy cap (different style BERU) and leads re-installed so I put all the new stuff back in.

So tonight I am left with the following symptoms:

Difficult to fire up
Needs 2000 rpm to idle
Backfires (pops) from exhaust and air filter
Dies when revs dropped.
A roaring headache.

Please help, the campsite is already paid for!

plugs on in wrong order usually gives this problem, firing order is 1 4 3 2 clockwise.

you`ve probally mixed the leads up. if not then put all the old stuff back on and change one thing at a time so you know what is causing the problem.

be methodical and if need be write down what you`ve done.

I did draw myself a diagram and I'm sure I put all back on properly. I have it so that the four connections on the top of the dizzy are in the same order as the plugs.

Ya get me?

remove the plug for no 1
take off the rocker cover over no1

using a suitable tool rotate the engine using the crank pully bolt.

when both valves are shut and the piston is at the top of the cylinder (pop a screwdriver in the plug hole and feel when the piston stops rising)

check the timing mark on the crank pully... should be at 12.00 oclock.

thats No1

attach the lead to where the rotor is pointing to

and then re attach the others moving clockwise round the dizzy

Is that 100% necessarry Kev, because I really don't know how to go about doing that. I'm going to go and put the leads on the right way and see how he runs...

Thank you everyone, especially Kev. I had 1 and 2 the wrong way round. Back to his old self again now.

A beer to celebrate me thinks, there is one in the tap for you lot.
