Butane (Gaz, camping gaz) size 907
you'll need a new fitting though for the bottle

We also use Campingaz, the 907 cylinder (which contains butane) and we keep two cylinders in the van (one in use and one as a spare). Another link here for finding people who sell it in far away places:
http://www.campingaz.com/ (click on the "where to find cartridges" link, it won't let me link directly to that page for some reason).
If you decided to switch over from propane you'd need to get a different regulator, but remember that propane is better for winter camping because it works at lower temperatures than butane does.
Price of a campingaz refill varies depending on where you live and costs £14 for a 907 refill round here. If you don't have a cylinder to refill it costs about £40 to get a cylinder and gas. When we wanted an extra cylinder we saved a few quid by asking at the council's rubbish tip where they have a compound for old gas bottles. I explained the situation with the difference in prices and a very kind person arranged to leave an empty 907 cylinder lying around outside the locked compound for me to accidentally discover the next day - they weren't allowed to sell me an empty cylinder for a few quid or just blatantly give them away to folk, so it was very good of her to do us a favour.

Anything but the 907 and you'll struggle ... 'Johnny foreigner'

uses a different regulator and they don't/won't trade for the UK cylinders.

When we used to spend 3 weeks in S of F, 1 X small (4.5kgs?) calor gas and 1 campingaz 907 for emergencies.
These would probably last 3 times as long if we needed them to.
