I have cleaned out the oil in the top of the lda under the diaphram.

The lda pin has a "flat" on it and it appaears to be possible to put it back in any position.

Where should the " flat" be in relation to the rest of the pump ???

the flat faces the cam belt cover . if you look down the hole where LDA pin sits you will see a small pin that protrudes from the side of the hole , it rests/rides on the pin.
best mod on these is to put a pin in from a 1.6 td or similar, it really really really wakes the engine up and improved my mpg no end.
