im thinking of brush painting some hammerite onto a couple of inconspicuous
areas on my pastel white van - like the flat bit behind the front bumper and below the back bumper - this should help keep out the rust.

i know hammerite is odd paint and was wondering if there was any other type of paint or anything else i could add in a tiny quantity to make the white hammerite a bit closer match to the alpine white which i guess is a creamy yellow white.

any ideas? or is it just a bad idea in the first place

I have used Hammerite smooth on my van and it works fine.

To be honest I use that techique quite often. I prefer hamerite to smoothrite as hamerite is proof against petrol (I use it to seal microscopic leaks in home made inles manifolds) while smoothrite is not (I used it on my boat and it came off with petrol) I think that providing you use masking tape to define and delineate the area treated it looks very functional and an accurate colour match is not essential. Well that is my preference anyway for what it is worth.

thanks ken - thats my opinion too - the paintwork on my van isnt too bad and i dont want to ruin it, but if i can 'paint and forget' certain problem areas that arent going to be noticed with hammerite then i think ill go with it.

i may have a little mess-about with some instant coffee dissolved in hammerite thinners and added in tiny amounts to knock the white back a little - ill let you know the results

game on! - it mixes perfectly well with those little enamel paints that you use for painting airfix models.

tiny bit of yellow and brown in plenty of white hammerite and i might get close enough...

there is of course the option of black! it eliminates the "it doesn't quite match" look, because it is not meant to!
