What does the Starter Motor Bush do?

On advice from a fellow camper I'm planning on changing my starter motor bush soon on my Aircooled 2l westy
Found all the info on how to do it from some excellent posts and of course the Wiki...
but I'd like to know what function the part I'm replacing serves. Feels a bit strange to replace something without understanding what that something does. Any light on the subject would be gratefully appreciated.

the bushing is just a bearing, without it the shaft jams, it has nothing to do with the elastic-trickery........... the face of the starter motor where it joins the bell housing is important as it forms part of the neg connection........so clean it up whilst you have the starter motor off.......

It supports the end of the somewhat overhanging shaft and takes the load off the motor bearings. If worn it will alow the gears to try to climb out of mesh with the eventual result of a starter jam. I found it to be an easy job using a nut and bolt and some sleeves but then I did have my gear box out at the time annd I can't remember if this assisted access.
Cheers

Access, tho not comfortable (craning your neck to see what you're doing!), is possible with everything in situ
