strange thing

I have been planning for some time to drop the engine and gearbox from my 2L air cooled for some overdue maintenance. I knew it needed a spigot shaft bearing and wanted to repair a few oil leaks and fit and oil temp gauge before we go away to Europe for the summer.
It had been running rough for a few days so I seized the moment and took it off the road for a period to "fix everything".
Imagine my surprise when I got the lump on the garage floor and began the dismantling. I removed the air filter assembly only to find one of the choke flaps and the corresponding throttle pump injector bent!!!

This may explain the rough running, but how the hell could this have happened? I certainly have no idea, no obvious clues.
Answers on a post card please!

I have the offending articles replaced now from a scrap carb, but I just don't understand how this could have happened.

Them there buggers can backfire and bend the flaps. They have been known to backfire and jam the flap closed.

Bugger!! That's some backfire.

I bet that was it. It has been running like a bag of SH-1T for a few days, and there have been a couple of back fires.

I guess that is mystery solved.
