carry that load!

We are away to Spain for 4 weeks this summer. I know we don't need to take loads of stuff, but the two of us and two kids too there are many things to consider.
I was thinking of getting one of these boxes you mount on the back, or maybe one of the bags (Fiamma cargo back) because they are cheaper. After all cost is of major importance.
I was wondering if anyone here has any experience of these products. There is obviously going to be some effect on handling and fuel economy, but are either of these unbearable? If you have used one, what type of rack have you used? Has anyone mounted it directly on the tailgate with "J" bars? I have a tow-bar, so was considering a tow-bar mounted platform, maybe even fabricating this myself!
I don't want to carry anything heavy in it, just want to maximize the space in the van. The things I had in mind for carrying on the outside were, folding chairs and table, chemical toilet, beach inflatables, water carriers (empty) etc.
I'd be grateful of any pointers, advice, before I spend my hard earned.
Thanks guys
Andy
