Hi,

MOT next week I thought I'd better have another look at my non-working horn.

I've tried a different horn...........................just very faint beep.
I've clean connectors in steering wheel button...........as above.
I've cleaned the copper ring & sprung connector under steering wheel...as above.
I've cleaned connector at base of steering column..........as above.

Tried to work out wiring.
I believe the circuit go's from fusebox to steering wheel. I believe I found this wire, it has 12v but by the time it gets to that bottom connector (where the shaft splits to stop you being stabbed in a crash) I only get 1 volt reading. What am I missing?

Repeat 1) but look closer at how it works and why it might not be (working)

ok,
if it were me, i would , in the first instance take a +12vdc feed from the battery ( a temp wire) to the + connection on the horn.......

see what that produces...........

the switched connection to the horn is -12vdc.......

therefore, if adding a (temp) + to the horn dont make it work correctly then take a -12vdc wire( temp) from the neg side of the battery( or body earth) and work out which line isnt working........

Don't get your hopes up. It doesn't sound that great when it does work

what type of horns do you have i have twin air horns which wernt working took them off sprayed wd40 down into them or rather poured it down left it to soak overnight fantastic sound now

What WD40 can't do is yet to be discovered by mankind...

however, i feel it must be noted, WD40 does rot some types of plastic, very quickly......wondefull stuff that it is for almost all jobs.................

Twin Audi air(?) horn. Have check them by connecting straight to battery & deafened myself for a good 2 minutes!

Still not 100% certain on your advices but will go & have another mess about right now!

If Haynes is to be believed, there should be a relay for dual horns.

The circuit shown is.......
From fuse S15 (10amp) to pin 4/86 of relay J4 (which is shown as in position 6 right hand end of top row on the fuse box) through the solenoid of the relay..... out at pin 1/85......brown/blue wire to the horn push and brown wire to earth 'Via the Steering Gear'

The positive feed to the horns comes from fuse S16 (10amp) direct to the horns via a black/yellow wire......... and from the horns a brown/blue wire goes to pin 3/87 on the relay....... through the contacts.... out at pin 2/30 and to earth via a brown wire to one of the crown earths next to the relay plate/fuse box.

Those crown earths seem to be a common cause of problems.

Relay: Good point -These more powerful horns running through the steering wheel push button probably do need a relay to reduce the switching current!

As I intimated earlier, removed cleaned and re-fitted my steering wheel switch only to find that it still didn't work so needed a better look at, can't remember exactly, but think parts had become deformed in there so no contact being made.

Are they the type that are fitted on metal brackets about two inches long?
If they are then these brackets are to allow the horn to resonate/vibrate. If you hard mount them then there will be no sound. But they will work if loose in your hand etc
Just a thought.

Three fuses later.............Still not much wiser.

Even had a elecie mate have a look later. He seemed happy with everything except feed, but he couldn't be a 100% certain.

Think I need to have a better look at fuse area.........Looks a nightmare & so fiddly!!

Cheers C-Mike, no its mounted on a flexie spring steel.

Okay, twin horns do need relay.

30 amp relay at fuse-box, new feed to horns then to earth, connect old feed to steering column & use steering horn button to activate relay.

Happy chap! Sounds much more like a vehicle of this size should.
