Hi , I don't believe I had this problem before my engine was removed .

The ball on the gearbox selector comes out of the socket which is on the long shaft that runs under the body of my 1.6 turbo diesel 1989 when I push the gearstick forward to try and select R,2nd,and 4th gears , I am trying this without the engine running as I have not got that far yet, any ideas would be of much help.

check the plate which mounts the selector shaft to the gearbox case is on the correct side of the flange on the gearbox case, I can't remember which side without looking but I think it should be on the front side.

Loosen bolts and push the plate up as far as it will go too..
