Hi all, I had coolant "P" ing out of the engine of my camper. Turns out that at some point in the past the retaining clip for the temp sensor has come off and now the sensor is hanging by the electrical connections. I can get a new sensor from JK but not the clip, anybody know where I might get a clip from??? Unfortunately I don't know what the clip looks like so can't describe it. Thanks for any help.

If you take a look at your thermostat housing, (the black plastic thingy) you'll see that there are two slots top and bottom of the 'boss' where the temp sensor fits in. The sensor is sealed with an 'O' ring and the wire clip slides into the two slots to keep the sensor in position against the coolant pressure. The slots are about 2mm wide and 28mm long.

The vag online catalog shows.......
retaining spring / temperature sender / thermal switch / temperature sensor
251 919 501 251 919 369 025 906 041 A /
032121142 HALTEFEDER 0.41 Euro (the spring clip)
and N 90316802 DICHTRING 0.63 euros (which is the 'O' ring.)

If it were me I would use a bit of steel wire just a bit narrower than the slot and wrap it around one side through both slots and twist the ends of the wire up gently but firmly as you would to safety wire something. If you cannot find the correct clip.

There may be another clip on the thermostat housing, my van has two sensors, one for the temp gauge, one for the ECU coolant temperature signal.

PS Clip is about 25mm diameter (just under one inch).

More thoughts............ or should that be THINKS
A couple of small cable ties linked together should hold the sensor in. Or make yourself a clip from a cheap key ring or the like.

I KNOW that mocki said it was 'Carp design', but that is modern production for you.

Hi Mike, many thanks for your help. You mention an "O" ring! when I spoke to Just Kampers they have the sensor but not "O"ring or clip, said the sensor presses in & is held in space with the clip! Doesn't quite sound right to me but then I'm no mechanic. I assume the no.s you quote above are for the sensor & "O"ring from VAG. Again thanks a lot for your help.

No......... standby while I search for 'O' ring part number, DICHTRING is I think the German for the spring clip.

OK this is what I think vagcat says is the 'O' ring.....

round seal 19.6 X 3.6 N 90316802 DICHTRING 0.63 Euro

and dichtring IS the German for 'O'Ring


and I think that 19.6 X 3.6 is Probably no......... not the best lager in the World, but the diameter and cross section respectively of the 'O' ring which is I think made of synthetic rubber. You can buy 'O' rings by the handful just find some of the correct cross section and diameter and resistant to the fluid they are in contact with and the temperature of that fluid. In this case coolant at about 110 degrees celsius.

You had better read through my posts again 'cause I have had to get a couple of German words translated to make some sense of the VAGCAT site.
Should be the right part numbers now, but a good bodge will probably be much easier than trying to find the exact bits.
