a later handle will fit a early, they are shorter........
it wont work the other way round tho........
there is a very small grub screw hidden under all the crap that you undo to release the barrel from the handle, clean the inner side of the handle and you should find it.........

Is the grub screw there to remove the barrel from the handle, the locking barrel is actually the prob.

Another question mocki, will a barrel from a new handle fit mine, if so jobs a goodun.

the grub screw holds the lock barrel in the handle, yes......
im not 100% sure that the new handle barrels are the same, but there is a good chance they are, maybe get yours out, and then speak to vw, or get a cross reference from a supplier like gsf?
or you could rekey your barrel lock to fit your key......
a quick conversation with
simon baxtermay well be your best bet,
he , i beleive does the re-keying and barrel black magic in his day job as "brickwerks"

I think these must go a lot. I borrowed a Devon earlier this year and the door would only lock from the inside. When I bought my Viking (1980 T25) the lock worked for a while, then would only lock from the inside, then wouldn't lock at all. I got another off a scrapper from the garage I bought her from, and it worked for a while, but now it too only locks from the inside, and then only after I have opened and closed it to get it just right.
Before you go out and get one anyone I would suggest trying locking from the inside through the passenger door. Then if that doesn't happen try opening and closing a few times to see if that works. I say this just because I think my original one would probably have been alright if I had done that, and rather than every 'new' one you get going the same way, like mine has, you may as well put up with doing that with the original.

You could check that the screw that holds the handle to the latch assy is tight as mine will not operate when this works loose...
Are you on about the lock in the handle or the latch assy not working??

I`m on about the locking barrel inside the door handle itself, the door locks ok from the inside via the little black toggle, its just a pain in the backside having to go into the van from the front to lock/unlock her, the key goes into the locking barrel ok but wont turn, makes you think that the key i`m trying is the wrong one....but i doubt it, just think it`s knackered.

Will it not even UNlock from the outside? Mine does that, you just have to LOCK it from the inside, which isn't too bad - I just reach through the passenger door.
I'll try tightening the screw though on mine, see if that works.
I did just find out something... the little metal thingy that comes down over the black toggle inside - that stops my door from shutting sometimes, I'm sure it bangs against the catch. I've now tucked it inside the door trim to see if that makes any difference.
