Planning next years holiday already. The rough route so far is France,Belgium,Germany,Switzerland,Austria,slovinia,Croatia,Montenegro,Albania and then get a ferry to Italy and drive back. Now the questions are can any one give advice on any of the Baltic states and Italy also ferries from any of the Adriatic states to Italy.

- er, are you getting the Adriatic confused with the Baltic?
Or do you intend to get a ferry all the way through the Med, across the Bay of Biscay, up the channel and so on?

if you go through the balkins leave albina out go on through to greece and catch the ferry from there back to ancona with superfast ferries from patras used to do it in the truck but stoped in the end too much hassle at borders just used to use the ferry to greece and then drive through to turkey easier

Have to agree with Ginge, some areas of Albania are 'no go' for tourists so check with the home office or similar. You can get the ferry from Patras (Greece) to Ancona or Venice with 'camping on board' (you use the van for accomodatiion) and it's very reasonable cost wise. Use to drive to the former Yugoslavia (before it broke up) down the Adriatic coast road, no problems there and very nice too and there used to be lots of camp sites! Germany, Austria are superb too, I wouldn't do Switzerland again, but hey,don't let me put you off. Sounds like you got a great adventure planned. I am sure you can get a ferry to Venice from Croatia but go to Greece if you have the time.

Avoid Albania. Either go inland and round or get the ferry from Venice or Ancona to Igoumenitsa, do a bit of Greece and then return to Italy via Ancona.

Try the Minoan Line ferry company, the ferry trip is a blast.

For Germany/Austria - for me the best parts are south of Munich.
For a nice run to Italy head for the Brenner pass, but don't use the motorway.

Take the old road, it's ideal bus country.

Then head for Lake Garda, avoid the top end (Riva del Garda, Torbole, etc) it's Germany's Blackpool.
We stop at Bardolino, fantastic food and the wine is knockout.

Heading further south toward Ancona is a bit of a grind, boring flat farmland and stinking hot.

Best turn left at the bottom of the lake and head for Venice.

If Greece is too far, head for Istria. Rovinj, Pula are worth a visit, especially Pula and its amphitheatre.

Istria is a low cost version of Italy and most of the camp sites are right on the coast.

The island of Krk, Cres are also good adventures. The water in the Adriatic is unbelievably clear and warm.

That's a lot of area to cover. You guys planning a least 4 weeks? Sounds like 2 months wouldn't be more like it.
