1.6 TD to 1.9 TD, people to do the conversion?

Hi

I am looking for a garage and a price to put in a 1.9 TD in my T25 inplace of the 1.6 TD

Have seen this has been asked before but did not see and garages or costs etc. Cant do it my self as I dont know what I'm doing.

expect to pay around 2-2.5k for the convertion not including the engine

2.5k is very steep for a 1.6td to 1.9td not including engine.I do that job for around 2k includig engine and lots of new parts.

I contacted synchro nutz a couple of months back to enquire about the cost of a 1.6 -1.9 td conversion and was quoted 5k with adjustments to gear box! Now you're telling me you will do it for half that, what is the true figure :?:

Was that for a TD or a TDi.. the 5k sounds near for a TDi.. TDi NEEDS gearbox upgrades, where the TD works with the std gearing

Theres not much difference between a jx 1.6td and a 1.9 AAZ TD - about 5bhp i seem to recall.

Unless the JX is fubarred i wouldnt bother.....

The quote of 5k I believe was for a mechanical 1.9 td. I know there is little difference in the horse power but there is better torque figures on the 1.9, if you then modify the box you don't need to rev so high to get the same performance which i guess will give you a better run over distance. I'm no mechanic but the 1.9 aaz conversion is very pop in sausageland and having worked over there for 3 yrs they rarely do anything without a good reason. I'm happy with the 1.6 at the moment as i've spent a fortune on it over the last few months (new fuel pump, new alternator, new belts and new turbo which is causing a few dramas but that's another story) but I'm looking to do a complete bare metal resto on the bus next year and would like to explore new engine variations that would give good fuel returns, better performance and good reliability over distance as I retire shortly and will be taking the bus on a euro windsurfing tour in 2010. If there's anyone interested or knows of anyone interested in taking on the job let me know.

I would imagine you mean a mechanical TDI?

As stated above, an AAZ conversion isn't that tricky - but the TDI does require the gear box to cope with the torque.

Anyway, you know all that im sure!

Bare metal conversion and then a TDI conversion! Awesome! And even better, a euro windsurfing tour!

Please keeps us updated - sounds like you have some great plans for your van.

"mechanical" usually refers to "mechanical TDi" as the 1.9 TD is already "mechanical"..... the mechanical TDi pump alone is over 1500 quid.... :shock: so I still think thats for a "TDi" conversion with box mods..

the 1.9TD can benefit from a slight gearing increase, but not totally neccessary as it doesnt have the big increase in torque and it revs the same as the 1.6TD..

There is a world of difference between a 1.9TD and a TDi conversion from what I have seen..

Speak to Russel again and clarify with him, Syncronutz are not in the habit of ripping people off...

If you were quoted £5000 it was for a" MTDI" not a "TD" these are two totaly different conversions.
The big problem here is people dont do their homework before phoning us and other specialists and to often think of a TDI as being the same as a TD.

sorry guys it appears I have made a mistake. The quote must have been for the MTDI as suggested by Synro dudes. What PS is the MTDI conversion and what sort of lead time do you guys in Scotland need to carry out the work.

simon baxter /brickwerks did my aaz (1.9 TD)install, I am well happy, it runs v well and I woudn't trust anyone else to do it. Get him to do it.

I have a 1z tdi in my van, cost £2300 inc 76k engine and a used 5 speed box, fitted in 2001 by the now defunct Transporter Services in Bournemouth. I bought the van in 2004, has never missed a beat and purrs along at 80, good on fuel and i even tow a 1300kg caravan regularly which it pulls very well
