"Buzzer of doom" Help with oil pressure

Hey folks,

I've just been on my first camping trip with the van and as expected problems started quickley.

The oil pressure light and buzzer started going on and off soon after we left Bristol, it was random buzzing, it would go on and off very quickley which made me think it was a faulty sensor. But as we started going the buzzing would start at about 20 mph then would stop at 40mph which made me think it was oil pressure.

We made the 70 mile journey with no problems just a little headache, on the trip back home the buzzing started again but it was not on so much.

Things i've checked/thought:

Faulty oil pressure sensor?

there is plenty of oil in the engine (if not a little too much that i should drain!)

Engine is an old '89 auto with 100,000+ miles! would a thicker oil be better for my engine. Currently using 15-40 mineral

I've just changed oil filter and there is a slight leak at the top of the filter! (Should change this i think?)

Engine leaks a little oil

Could it be the oil pump?

Ok so the engine runs fine when its started and the buzzer is driving me and the lady crazy.

Any ideas from anyone, anyone had any similar problems and fixed it?

Thanks for reading,

The first trip was amazing loved it can't wait to get out there again!!

first off, read how the system works in wiki - although you may have to read it several times to make it make sense! :D

then search buzzer of doom, oil pressure etc - always useful tips on what to look for etc etc :D

have a good read, do the checks, then pose the questions again!

Glad you had a great first trip without getting over familiar with the back of a flat bed.... :D

Enjoy the bus and the club

Dirty,
before you do anything else ,,a simple Oil and Filter change can rectify this type of fault.

Hi D,

Had exactly the same prob - like quite a few other folk here it seems! - when went on long trip to Cornwall last year. Got about 4 miles on journey and woah!, red light flashing, buzzer and all that other stuff you don't need for the start of a relaxing holiday!

Done all the things as the other guys/gals rec. Change oil, filter, clean all the earth points, etc and also changed the printed circuit board. Seems to have done the trick :D , but also fitted an oil pressure VDO gauge and sender. Really useful as this is bit of a 'belt and braces' job. If the buzzer does inadvertainly go off after all the aforementioned oil changes etc, at least you'll know what really is really happening back there in the engine bit, also allows you to keep a constant check too as to what's happening oil pressure wise.

All best with it though! : :)

well in the end i took it to the garage as i'm lending the Van to the misses to drive down to glasto and don't want her having trouble with it.

They checked the oil pressure and reported back that it was fine but they did notice that a couple of hoses where babdly worn and needed replacing. This seems to have done the job no 'buzzer of doom' yet!

Thanks for all the advice, i may get a VDO gauge and change it to 20-50 next oil change.
