1.9 wasser box rebuild part ?

I've undertaken a rebuild after the water leak from my 1985 DG 1.9 water cooled got really bad. After trying to change the studs in the engine casing i took it to a local engineers who promptly ruined it so i bought a secondhand set off ebay, minus crank and everything.
I didn't notice until after cleaning that the bearings are different, my crank has thick wall bearing but these won't fit in what i believe is a later casing. So, i bought a later set of bearings from GSF.
Can anyone tell me if it is possible to put an early crank into a later casing and what parts i need. The set of bearings i've bought are just that, they did not come with the two large washers that make the three piece bearing at the flywheel end and don't know if there should be any other different seals in there.
Can someone tell me what i need, what order they go on and where to get them. My local VW garage are less than helpful saying all parts are obsolete and don't know where else to go.

Cheers

You have a choice of 2 blokes who could help you with your questions, First would be Russel at Syncronutz in Scotland ( he has to be one of the most clued up people on the subject of the T25/T3 I have ever come across ) or a man who lives on the border of Scotland , a so called VW engine builder who is know as Mr Laurie Pettitt.

You will have to do a bit of 'Googling' to get the relevant phone numbers, but I'm sure they will be able to advise you of your next move.

You have just opened the can of worms and they wont all fit back in...

early engine have different bearings to late engines.. and as far as I am aware you wont get either to mate up without some buggering about which makes it worthless...

Now picking up a later 1.9 or even 2.1 crank will be easier.. you can then biuld up with the late style bearings in the late case.. if you use a 2.1 crank you will need a set of 2.1 pistons (MV or SS I would suggest rather than DJ) I was once told that DG pistons can be machined down the 3 mm and work fine.. but I have also been told this gives a very high compression ratio.. I havent measured the volumes yet to check either info..
You may find Laurie will take the early crank in part ex on a late crank if he uses the early cranks in his "wbx crank in a beetle case" specials..

The 69mm cranks are all the same for either early or late bearings.
All the dimensions are the same. The 2.1 was the first to have the late bearings fitted and in 1987, they made all the engines thin wall bearing.

So... as I explained, the 69mm crank will fit from an early engine into a late, it is just the bearings that differ. It also means that the cases became universal after 1987 and are all capable of taking the 2.1 crank, with the 2.1 pistons!

The downside is that the buzzer of doom came into play at the same time and gave people heart attacks.

I think Mr Beans did call me and is searching for crank thrust washers, available from anywhere that sells K/schmidt.

SO what you are saying is the "early" crank is identical to the the "late" and you use the late bearings in the late case which are available.....

Yes. Mr Beans can put the worms back into the can with no problem.
Buy a schadek heavy duty (30mm) oil pump for the 4 bolt cam, Mr Beans.
